Tabs Wrongly Indicate New Content in a Forum Category

Hi,

checking the forum for new content I sometimes see the tab “New” is indicating that there is something new in a category ("New (1)). However, if I click on “New” the screen will remain as is and I can’t open the category unless I click on “Latest”.
Whenever I check, there are no new posts or topics at all.

This happens every now and then without any apparent logic (on my computer and on my mobile). Most of the time it works as expected, though. Anybody else experiencing the same kind of odd behaviour?

When you see the screen snapshot and click on New (1) does the New go away?

If yes, that would be expected behaviour, if you’ve either opened all of the new posts or clicked on the “Dismiss New” button in any open browser window or tab on any of your devices.

The New is not for all unread content. It’s merely for entirely new threads. i.e. a new post in an old thread will not show up in New. If you want to follow the new posts in a thread that you haven’t posted in, you’ll need to change the bottom notification drop down from Normal to Tracking or Watching (I use Tracking). And then new posts will show up in the Unread section.

If I recall correctly the New also has a max age of thread creation.

Hi Nico,
thanks for your reply.
If I click on New (1) nothing changes. Everything remains as is with the “1” behind “New” and being unable to enter the category itself. Usually, it behaves the way you’d expect it and like you described it. This happens once in a week and it comes as unexpectedly as it goes. No idea why.

My settings are all blank - nothing is tracked or watched be it categories or tags:

Strange, isn’t it?

Yeah seems a bit weird - like some sort of JavaScript not being run in the browser?

I use Firefox 140.0.2 on MacOS 15.5 and Win10 22H2 (with uBlock Origin) and Safari on iOS 18.5 – what do you use?

I’m on Windows using Forefox 140.0.2, too. Happens in other browsers as well and also on my mobile. It’s not the end of the world, it usually gets back to normal within a couple of hours and I’m used to it. I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same or if I am doing anything wrong.

Wonder, if the weirdness could also be related to CDN (Content Delivery Network) usage?

I haven’t bothered to dig into the underlying structure of this forum, but CDN caching gone slightly astray would be another possibility for different experiences from different locations.

Yeah, that would make perfect sense since I sometimes switch between devices and forget to log out before I log in on another device. I am not sure if this also happens if I stay on a single device, I will look into this. Good thinking, I guess you are onto something! :+1:
Thank you!

Hi @Nico5 ,

I would like to mark your post as solution but this is not possible in a forum thread. I wasn’t aware of that so I thought I let you know in case you aren’t either

It’s very kind of you to mention that.

However, I never thought of this kind of thread having a good solution/answer.

And I’ve long stopped being frustrated by my answers not being marked as solutions - life’s too short and imperfect all around!

But a very warm thank you for being so considerate.

p.s. You generally have a lot more patience in this forum than I have. I’ve long admired that!

Thanks a lot, that’s really kind of you to say :folded_hands:
It’s not that I don’t lose my patience, too…

That’s a very good attitude! Trying to be nice to each other is reason enough - more than ever these days - and you are setting an excellent example

The whole forum smells like… Victory!

Apologies for the misquotes, I claim poetic licence and old age.
