Note events include a Text parameter/field. Is this part of the standard MIDI specs? I can’t find an equivalent in other DAWs, so I wonder if it is some special feature of the Cubase MIDI implementation.

I was going to ask, slightly off-topic, whether the MIDI2 specification has a way to deal with lyrics?

No, this Note parameter is not part of Standard MIDI File.
At least you have a text-field
