Hi there , here’s another oldie I’ve blown the dust off ,I recorded this about 15 years ago ,I fancied trying a rave type of thing and chose this tune to cover ,the female vocals is of a girl singer I was in a band with, we covered great gig in the sky by pink Floyd and recorded it one night ,I lifted her vocals from the recording and superimposed it on this track changing what she sung to fit this using melodyne plugin .I got the synth sounds using a Shadow midi guitar pickup .plus there’s a few samples I lifted from tubular bells ,hope you enjoy it.
Listen to tubular bells by catscurlyear on #SoundCloud
Been literal decades since I’ve listened to Tubular Bells, but I vaguely remember it being a little longer…
The lady singer is good. Gig in the Sky is ambitious for any singer.
I like busier drums, but that’s just my preference - I like every drummer to emulate Keith Moon. Ha ha!
Missed a guitar solo.
Good effort.
Have a pint, on the house!
PS
Nice title!
It’s an excellent distillation of the Tubular Bells themes set to a rather catchy dance rhythm.
I like the concept, and I think it’s well executed. I enjoy the timbres and tonal colors used. The vocal style is an excellent choice, though—as @Googly mentioned—it’s missing a guitar solo (wasn’t Oldfield a guitarist?).
Thanks for your reply Googly ,yes I normally like to stick a guitar solo in there, a time to just play what I feel but on this track I wasn’t really bothered.
The girl singer is great ,she did hear this track years ago when I first did it, she didn’t tell me “no you can’t use it” even though I had messed about with the notes heavily in melodyne , she seemed cool about it,I wonder what she’d think now lol.
Yes,this is just a mere snippet bite size portion of the original. You are very good doing long tracks ,I don’t know how you do it especially when tracks evolve gradually instead of sections that are very distinct from previous ones .
Thanks Rene for the positive remarks ,yes Mike Oldfield is a guitarist but I don’t know if he ever just let rip like a Jimi Hendrix or people like that .He definitely played parts on the album ,he has a distinct style on the guitar but the parts he plays seem composed instead of improvised but still very effective , I remember seeing him on a tv program playing tubular bells live along with Steve Hillage who could let rip.
