Understanding Rests With Percussion Kits

Hello,

I’ve been using Dorico for a few years now, but I don’t normally use it for concert band music. Because of that, I wanted to challenge myself and try to do a full concert band piece inside of Dorico. I grabbed a concert band score that I have and I started to input the piece into Dorico. However, I hit a snag with the percussion instruments, specifically “Percussion 1”.

I don’t know how I got the whole rest in bar 3 to appear while there are other notes on the staff. I do want to keep the whole rest in bar 3 while there are other notes. My main question is, how do I always show the whole rest, like in bar 3, when the only notes that are in the bar are the bass drum notes (the notes that are right below the staff)? I entered a note for the bass drum in bar 5, but for some reason the whole note doesn’t appear like it did in bar 3. How can I make the whole note appear in bar 5?

I included my Dorico file as well. Would love to learn what I’m doing wrong! Thanks so much!

If you turn on View->Note and Rest Colors->Voice Colors, you see that the rests have a different voice color at the beginning. perc1 has voice 4. You can see that in the status bar. I deleted the rests and had to re-input bar 3. Not sure why that has happened since the percussion kit is set up with voice 1 only. Did you change voice manually?

I made the bass drum notes to be the only notes for that kit to use voice 2. I asked Gemini for help before asking on here. Why did you delete bar 3 and re-input it again? I like/liked the way bar 3 looks/looked. Also, what do you mean by the “status bar” in Dorico?

The status bar is at the bottom. There was something strange with bar 3, one beat missing, or rather the rest was in voice 4. If you prefer the rest position you had, you can change that in the properties panel.

Jesper

Sorry for the late response. I see the changes that you made, but why isn’t the whole rest that was originally in bar 3 no longer there? I tried moving the whole rest that’s highlighted purple, but that whole rest evidently belongs to “Percussion 2”. So, what am I doing wrong then?

No, the whole note rest belongs to perc 1. There were 3 different voices in bar 3. The whole note rest was voice 4, the quarter note rest was downstem voice 1, and the notes were upstem voice 1. The rests also had force duration ticked. I have no idea how you entered it to get all those voices. I deleted everything in voice 4, including the whole note rest. It should all be very simple to enter. Also, have a look at Library->Notation Options->Percussion.

Jesper

Thanks for that info. I got the rests to show like how I’m wanting them to for “Percussion 1.” However, despite having the same settings the whole rests aren’t showing up in “Percussion 2” like they are in “Percussion 1.” I’m not sure why.

Could you share your latest version?

Jesper

I sure can!

There’s only one voice used in perc 2 and only a bongo roll in the score, so I don’t understand what you expect to see.

Jesper

I’m wanting to see a whole rest like I see in “Percussion 1.”

You mean under the bongo roll?

Jesper

Yes, that is correct!

Like this. I changed the large gong in perc2 to voice 2 and inserted a rest in that voice with shift-B rest. I guess you are trying to replicate a score?

Yes, I am trying to replicate a score. I mentioned that in my original post. I don’t have very much concert band experience with Dorico. I’m sometimes an engraver (I mainly do engraving for marching band music), and I want to expand my knowledge. I’ll look at your file here in a bit.

How did you change the large gong in perc2 to voice 2?

In the percussion kit editor. Actually, the same voice, but downstem.

Jesper

So, I see a whole rest in the bars after bar 5, but not one in bar 5. What am I still missing for bar 5?

That’s odd. I downloaded the file jesele uploaded and I see a rest there

I entered the whole rest in the bar before. I must admit that the whole percussion rest thing is a bit of a mess, or I don’t understand it enough.
