Found a solution that works for me
Just thought I`d share this in case it helps anyone
I Have 2 identical hardware rigs with the exception of the audio interfaces
Both are i7 6800k with Asus x99A ii mainboards and Nvidia Graphics running Windows 10 Pro
One is at work in the studio with RME HDSPe AES-32 PCIe system with Protools, Cubase and all bells and whistles
And the other I use for home work with Cubase office and fun stuff internet as well as Cubase
I’ve access to all kinds of kit including many sound interfaces
Ive had nothing but trouble with random pops and clicks using my UR44 on both machines
Not dependant of buffer size, like many others have found here , sometimes many minutes apart then sometimes several in a few seconds
On both machines no problem like this with others cards and drivers inc Scarlett MOTU 828 and all others I’ve tried
Been everywhere with all the tweaks in this tread and elsewhere some made a difference but no cure just sometimes a change.
Just tried two tweaks that for me have cured the problem so much so that undoing the other tweaks still leaves the problem cured.
Don’t know why it works but totally repeatable here.
Both are tweaks to the Nvidia Control settings
Power Management set to max (Not enough on its own)
Thread optimisation set to OFF
Now stable at 96 samples and even set to 64 apart from the fact aiso peak light is permanently lit I hear no audible problems
It now behaves like you would expect it to with larger buffer needed as workload increases BUT no more random pops.
No idea why it works here but it does.
The UR44 gave no trouble on my old x58 machine which also had an Nvidia graphs or the laptop
