Use my own folders per project

Trying to setup my Cubase Pro 14 like my earlier version. I like to manage all my audio in my own folder per project (instead of having one big global project where audio for all projects gets copied and referenced from). For example, I will put a “Source_Audio” folder next to my project, and keep all my sound effects in there. What settings change do I make so Cubase references audio from my folders “per project” rather than copying audio to a big global folder that it manages.

You’re really digging in!

There are many ways to approach this, both structurally and from a “feature” use with the way Cubase will perform a Save As or Backup Project function. Everyone has their own way of approaching it, and there are many different opinions on the good and bad of how it works.

I’d start with watching a few different videos on C14 project file management and organization just to get an idea of how different people do it. That’s the first place I’d start, anyway.

What @Thor.HOG said. Investing how Cubase handles files is time well spent :+1:

Save as and Backup

If you want imported audio files to reside within your project folder per default, please open the dialog below and check the “Copy all files to Project folder”, too.

If you want to make sure that every referenced audio file (e.g. from the Sampler Track) resides in your project’s audio folder as well please open
Media/Prepare Archive.
Now, all referenced audio files reside as a copy in your project’s audio folder. From here on you can leave your project folder as is, rename it or make a backup in a different location with the option to get rid of unused files.

There are different approaches indeed. Here’s how I do it:

I have a template that I use for every project. I create a new project from that template, and simply “save as” in my desired project location. That will set the audio folder to that location and any recorded audio files will end up there.

As @Reco29 pointed out, if you import audio files, check that box that will copy those files into your project location.

Hope this helps!
