Very Basic Signal Flow question

In the Signal Flow on the same Channel Strip, do Sends include any Insert processing from that strip or are they independent (acting on the original signal)? Apologies for the basic question.

This was a very helpful video on Signal Flow in Cubase. Understanding the CUBASE Channel SIGNAL FLOW - Basic Overvue - YouTube

Yes they do include every previous processing. The signal flow is from left to right, as displayed by the different tabs in the Channel Settings. There’s a button to swap the Inserts and Strip order, and the Strip modules can be rearranged.

The order is :
Inserts → Strip → EQ → Sends → Outputs
or,
Strip → Inserts → EQ → Sends → Outputs

@Louis_R Thanks!

@Louis_R I think you forgot there are pre and post inserts as well as sends.

@mlib You’re totally right! Albeit this only sets how the signal is sent in relation with the fader. The signal is still processed in the same order, so it does not actually interferes with the base signal flow.

What I was looking for was the “straight” (default) path. The pre and post settings I can handle. Thanks!

Not to forget the PRE Gain and the PRE filter section, that are always at the very beginning.

No, it also affects the sends.
Also the EQ is part of the channel strip and can’t be separated with inserts in between.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe it should be more like this:

Strip is post inserts (default)
Pre Section (HC/LC/Gain/Phase) → Pre-Fader Inserts → Strip (includes EQ) → Pre-Fader Sends → Volume Fader → Post-Fader Inserts → Post-Fader Sends → Pan → Output

or
Strip is pre inserts
Pre Section (HC/LC/Gain/Phase) → Strip (includes EQ) → Pre-Fader Inserts → Pre-Fader Sends → Volume Fader → Post-Fader Inserts → Post-Fader Sends → Pan → Output

That’s a lot prettier!

I sometimes would need to have a way to “send channel signal to sends pre inserts and pre strip”, but it seems to be not possible in Cubase [and I don’t know other DAW can]

EDIT: and also a “phase switch” on each send would be handy!

You could just set up an intermediate group track for the purpose of splitting the signal to multiple other channels.

Yeah thanks, there are many workarounds, but it’s honestly tedious, as you need it very rarely like an effect in the finished mix, but it’s often useful to test phase issues.

Great scheme! If this scheme is not already in the cubase manuals, steinberg should be ashamed of themselves…

If it was the thumbnail on the ‘Learn how to get around Cubase in just 14 minutes’ video it would have saved me 14 minutes
