Hi, I’ve recently swapped over from Sibelius to Dorico. I have very much enjoyed getting used to the program, and it’s a breath of fresh air - so for that, thank you!
However, I am hitting infuriating problems near constantly with VSTs. Here is my particular setup:
VoiceMeeter Banana, using Voicemeeter ASIO within Dorico
NotePerformer 3
HALion Pro
I have found that once a project is setup and working, it will work until either the playback template is modified or changed, or something like a new player is added. At which point, all bets are off, its dead Jim. The only way I have been able to remedy this is either a full restart (no thank you), or following tips I found elsewhere on the forum to unzip the dorico file, remove the vstaudioengine folder, and bring it in again. This has often helped.
Using a mix of NP and HL, I eventually found out how to create a custom playback template which would assign sounds from HL for guitars and use NP otherwise. This solved issues I was having when manually trying to change guitars to the HL set (which rarely worked - back to the issue above of modifying the playback template). I then needed to add a Bass Clarinet - this broke everything again, so I reverted, and gave up on that idea.
There must be something fundamentally broken on my system, as I can’t get playback working cleanly from a new project. Today for example, I tried to create a simple string group. Nothing plays. It won’t play when I swap to a factory playback template, and it won’t play if I try the unzip trick. I’m often going into task manager and seeing VSTAudioEngine frozen, killing it, and trying again. At this point, only a restart helps.
I’ve attached a couple of projects that will hopefully illustrate this. The first is a solo piano, which does not play back. The second file is a small string group which has also yet to play for me.
solopiano.dorico (470.7 KB)
strings.dorico (555.8 KB)
I would greatly appreciate your help! I love Dorico and really do not want to have to go through VST issues every time I create a new project. I have VSTAudioEngine dump files for both working and non-working cases, but the file sizes are huge (700MB - 1.7GB).
