What type of guitar strings and effects and pedals do you use?

What type of guitar strings do you use? Which company? What gauge?

Come on, @Abraham.H. We all know you’re a bot at this point.

Anyway, I’ll play …

It depends on the guitar.

It depends on the guitar.

It depends on the guitar.

BTW you can delete it.

Also, AI is awesome!

Also, also … you never answered my question …

In all my years, even when I could hear proper, on any given recording, I’ve never been able to tell which guitar is being used, what amp(s), which speakers cab(s), what FX, let alone which strings and what guage.

In my case, the cheapest string set that does the job which for me is this Brazilian brand SG. They are about on par of quality with the major brands but I can buy a set of 3 for half the price of a single Ernie Ball or D’addario set.

I used to use D’addario, then when those became quite expensive, Ernie Ball. Then I was a bit bummed with their sneaky marketing scheme of selling string sets where you’re paying more for different wound strings (Only the winding of their Custom Gauge Stainless Steel set is stainless steel, same for Cobalts, etc.). Then when I needed new strings I decided to try this brand I mentioned before because…There’s not that much of a difference between string sets in practice. These are better than the Ernie Ball sets I used to use in the sense you don’t lose the brightness after only 2 days.

Gauge wise, I used to use 10s, but I switched to 9s. Maybe if I want to tune one step down again, I might switch back to 10s.

@Scab_Pickens See that topic again.

I use 0.10 on most of my electric guitars. Usually, I go with Earnie Ball or something in that price range.
For guitars that are assigned for special tasks like Nashville tuning, drop tunings or different tunings in general I use other gauges and sets depending on what I want to achieve.

I’m sort of going lighter on gauge. I used to play 11s in standard when I was younger.

For a long time in the 80s and 90s, or thereabouts, I used these strings - for the life of me I can’t remember their name. This is the sticker that came with most packs.

I’ve used Gibson strings (of course!), which I liked, but lately, Ernie Ball. Just bought a set of Slinky Cobalts, still sitting in a drawer..
All the above mostly the usual 10s to 45s (-ish). I toyed with 9s, once, but didn’t like 'em. Tried a hybrid for a year or two of 10s to 50s.
My current set is about 12 years old.

I carve notches on one side of my pick - helps bring out the overtones.

edit
I googled ā€œ1990s guitar strings stable pictureā€ and found them - Dean Markley!

GHS Boomers … .010-.046 ( light ).

Always find them to be nice and bright… almost ā€˜chimey’. Easy to roll off if it’s too much!

Don’t call me a boo…
Oh, wait…

What effect/s pedal/s do you use?

Wah wah, doubler, flanger, masses of echo. This is what I used to use when I recorded my guitar, now I use the software equivalents - mainly Waves GTR, and Satin for the echo.
(ECHO! Not delay.)

I also use a nail file to add a few notches to one edge of my triangular pick - really brings out the harmonics, assuming you don’t break the damn strings!

I use .010 gauge daddario nickle coated strings on my electrics. I bought coated strings at last change as I’m lazy at changing strings too often. I use .012 gauge Martin 80/20 strings on acoustics as I bought a bulk pack of 50 strings a few years back when I was doing lots of guitar repairs, but not many nowadays. I put a small piece of masking tape on the back of the headstock with the date I changed the strings so I’m not guessing how old they are.

Neat trick and tip. So obvious a thing to do and I wish I’d thought of it first!

I got a memo in my mobile for that reason. Masking tape seems to be the more straightforward approach, though.
At the end of the day, I change strings whenever it is needed. I don’t have a schedule.

I don’t play my guitar much, these days - my thumbs hurt to much. I think the strings on mine are at least 10 years old.
I mostly use the guitar for working out chord sequences and melodies, just for a few minutes at a time.

I agree. I change my string/s only if it snaps or gets old.

I only change my G-String when it snaps or gets old. Also, I go back and forth between wound and unwound  . Most of the time I like to wind them up high and tight, though  .

I need a dozen stiff brandies to get that image out of my mind!
:scream:

That’s ironic you made this post on Jimi’s deaf (death) day .

All the recordings I’ve posted on here are old and when I was gigging regular and the strings I used then were d’darrio 11’s or however you spell it .

Just in the past couple of years after watching a rick beato program about why he used 8’s for recording was better for tonal separation from the bass ,I thought was quite interesting so I now have 9’s on my electrics

My acoustics I use 12’s but the actions are as low as I can get em.
