I am working to create a rehearsal piano part for a two hour and fifteen minute work. I am having trouble with the reduction. I need to learn how to do this efficiently.
The documentation says that notes copied from multiple staves that all have the same rhythm should be copied into a single voice. That is what I want. But what I am getting is multiple voices (a stem up and a stem down), plus an identical note will show up twice, once up stem and once down stem.
Is there a way to force the reduction to paste into a single voice?
If that can’t be done, is there a way to quickly clean it up to get everything into a single voice and to eliminate the duplicated notes?
I have been working a few measures at a time to try to avoid confusing the reduction, and also pasting into only one staff at a time, but that is not helping.
I can understand different rhythms ending up in different voices, but I’m having trouble understanding why multiple staves with identical rhythms are getting pasted into two voices.
I am new to using this capability in Dorico so it is likely I don’t understand yet how to get it to do what I want.
It’s a great feature, I use it all the time. Can you screenshot source and destination results from the reduce command? I’ve run into a number of ways that trip up this algorithm.
Here are a couple of screenshots. The top one shows four measures, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Trumpet in Bb 1, and Trumpet in Bb 2.
The bottom screen shot shows the Piano grand staff.
The top line in the grand staff results from selecting and copying all of the measures in the top screen shot and then selecting the first measure in the top line and using the Paste Special>Reduce command.
In the bottom line of the grand staff I did one measure at a time.
You can see that doing one measure at a time, the result was a single voice. Doing multiple measures at a time it resulted in two voices.
Triplet in the middle is the cause, do that measure separately. Once it reached that measure, multiple voices were available to “reduce” into. Staggered entrances are another thing that trips up Reduce.
Could it be that from earlier attempts where I was selecting more instruments before copying, an additional voice was created that didn’t show but was there and ready for the reduction to use? Is there any way to clean up the two piano staves so that they are reduction ready?
Also, is there a good list anywhere of best practice in Dorico for doing reduction to create a piano score from a full orchestral + voices score? I’m creating a piano part for the rehearsal piano vocal score. I’m going through and trying to capture enough of the essence of the full score so that the singers won’t be thrown for a loop when they move from rehearsal with a piano to a full orchestra in performance. And, to be truthful, the chances are about zero that I’m going to get a full orchestra anytime soon (if ever) but there is a good chance I can finagle a performance with a synthesized orchestra running off of Logic Pro or even just audio files of the orchestra.
I doubt it.
If you view>voice colours, you could easily check that each source instrument is only using a single voice if you think that is the cause of the problem.
(It is easy to put everything into a single voice by selecting notes, then right-click>voices>change voice…)
