Will Nuendo 13 have the same new GUI as Cubase 13

It looks like the GUI changes in Cubase 13 are polarizing. Should we discuss before the N13 release?

Iā€™m actually looking forward to the GUI and that sleek channel inspector. Donā€™t know why those noobs on the Cubase forum are whining about it. It does look quite similar to Studio One, which isnā€™t a bad thing.

Edit: Sorry for the bad joke! :disappointed:

Does the GUI still flicker hysterically as soon as the cursor touches any element when hovering? If so: Why canā€™t Nuendo at least have a visually ā€œcalmā€ basic structure, like the now equally boring-looking (yet more practical) ProTools GUI?

I hope that Nuendo 13 gives an option to dim the bright colors.

Since 2017, I started using Cubase/Nuendo. I always upgraded to the latest version and deleted the previous version. With GUI changes almost every time, I never had an issue and in fact, I embraced the new look every time.

However, for the first time, I am considering not to upgrade to Nuendo 13 if it has those colors like Cubase 13.

Itā€™s always good to remember that a lot of times that we see threads like the one in the link we donā€™t really know for sure how the user have their preferences set.

Having said that there are a few things I agree with, especially being able to tone down the bright colors in some cases.

To me, based on that other thread:

  • Mute / Solo look cleaner, but also a bit too saturated maybe?
  • I agree that making all icons in the track header white makes that part of the screen brighter on average, and a bit more distracting. Maybe a bit more toward grey? (post: Cubase 13 is great, but the look changed for the worse - Cubase - Steinberg Forums)
  • Mixer: Not sure how I feel about black vs white text on those colors (post: Cubase 13 is great, but the look changed for the worse - Cubase - Steinberg Forums). Hopefully thatā€™s all good in practice. Hard to tell from a screenshot.
  • Mixer: Definitely donā€™t like the highlight around the channel though. To me all I need is a subtle but clear indication of which channel is selected and this just seems a bit harsh. Itā€™s not just the intensity which we maybe can turn down in preferences, but there also seems to be a thick border surrounding each section of the mixer channel; i.e. one around the panner, one around the fader, one around the meter, one around fader and meter values, and so on. To me that seems completely unnecessary and just distracts the eye. Personally I would have been fine with either the shading of the previous version or a border around the channel, not within it. I kind of hate it.
  • Mixer: Not sure about the bigger difference between the fader section and the meter right next to it. Now theyā€™re closer in color. It actually sort of goes back to the previous point because with a deeper dark (v12) next to the fader you donā€™t need a ā€˜dividerā€™ when selecting the channel to indicate that theyā€™re two different sections. Perhaps the now flatter look is better in practiceā€¦

None of the above are dealbreakers to me but since this thread exists and Iā€™m bored I figured Iā€™d put my thoughts in itā€¦

My biggest concern is the changes to the visibility of a selected track.

Only noobs over there?

Basically, I have no problem with changes to the GUI. However, I often get the impression that such changes are made not only because they need to be made, but also because the graphic designer(s) would otherwise have nothing to do.
And because everyone does. With every new Blu-ray or UHD BD, your favourite film suddenly has a new colour grading. (I can often guess when the disc was released just by looking at the colour palette. There are real fashions.)

By default CB13 has this vague highlight but you can easily change this in the preferences with a slider.

Yeah, that was a pretty tasteless comment ā€¦ :unamused:

Arenā€™t we all newbies when it comes to a new build of Cubendo?

The GUI changes that influence me the most are more of lacking of functionalities rather than style changes. They are:

  1. No quick access to the colorize panel for a track in the Inspector.
  2. No FFT curve display for Equalizer view in the Inspector.
  3. Not able to see all 16 insert slots in the Inspector.

The new button, text styles are not necessarily slowing down my workflow, even if some of the changes are not satisfying for many people, including me.

Nubs? Iā€™ve been using Cubase since Atari St and the GUI especially the white letters are too bright on the eyes with people with visual sensitives like me. Cubase 12 did not have this issues. I own Nuendo as well and I hope they fix it before it comes out.

Did these GUI changes make things faster? Like, can you now drag a track from the bottom of a large project to the top without getting hungry in the meantime? Surely these choices werenā€™t purely aesthetic, because they are ugly af.

I agree, and Iā€™m sorry about that! Only meant it in humour, since I saw so many people battling it out. :pensive: It was a poor joke.

V13 UI is like Studio One, horrible. I will not upgrade.

A flat design is theory-over-function. It actually decreases functionality, making it harder to distinguish between different UI elements. Is it a button or just an indicator? Active or inactive? A flat design for a DAW makes even less sense, since a DAW needs a complex UI, with an overwhelming number of details, and letā€™s not forget about plugins which rarely are flat. It is very different than a minimalistic, clean website.

I just dont know why we go from nice rounded corner buttons for R W M S to square flat rectangles?
Always loved the Circle record buttin in the inspector with the pulled down greay area. Why is it necessary to change areas of the application like this and waste engineering time?

Answering my own question hereā€¦ No. Still slow af

The GUI always changes over time. It will change again eventually if you are not a fan. I remember Cubase VST had a look, than SX, then non-SX. They just give things a fresh coat of paint. Iā€™m sure based on some feedback not liking certain aspects, it will again get revamped.
