Windows 10 1607 Anniversary Updated

I took a screenshot…
Note the greyed out bit that says “Never check for updates (not recommended” and the bit underneath that says “Your organization has turned off automatic updates”.
I installed Win10 on 27th July, just before the deadline. I got all all the updates up to that date, edited updates with gpedit, and I’ve not had a single update since. Bad form, I know…

Excellent! Now all you have to tell us is how to do it. Sorry if I’m slow but I don’t see that option in gpedit.msc on my machine.

In the “All Apps” menu thing, type “gpedit.msc” (without the quotes!) and the policy editor will open. It’s one of those hidden tools, like regedit.
On the left hand side go to User Configuration->Admnistrative Templates->Windows Components->Window Update. You should see something like the screenshot.
There’s a whole bunch of other stuff in there so the same advice as for regedit applies here!

Ha Ha! Cheers, off to wreck my PC immediately and will blame it all on you. :smiling_imp:

It wasn’t me, officer! 'Onest guv!

gpedit it is only included in the pro version of Windows, if you use the home version your out of luck.

Soryy, should have said. :frowning:

No, he did not report any.

I found AE did rest some power settings in the usb hubs (device manager, “Allow computer to turn power off on this device?”, or something similar). I changed those back, then prophylactically performed maintenance on my e-mail licenser. Cubase ran fine after that.

I did forget to choose any plug-ins that were on my iLok 2, I’ll have to check that out also.

I see one poster above noted that the onboard soundcard got activated. Is that a bad thing? I wonder if mine did also, as I just remembered there was a new Realtek audio icon in the reminder bar that I don’t remember there being before.

Has anyone seen a comprehensive list of potential changes AE could make, to run through?

Everything fine, other than my MCDSP compressors etc (CB101 and so on) are only reading zeros, despite audibly functioning. I just rolled back the update to previous windows build and everything is fine.

I wonder what that could be?

Myles

My experience was a bit less fulfilling. After accepting the update, a couple things went wrong right away:

  1. Cubase was sending MIDI data to the wrong interfaces. I have three identical MOTU MIDI Timepiece AV interfaces. Data that would normally go to interface #2, port 4, for example, was now going to interface #3, port 4. Reviewing Cubase’s device list revealed nothing out of the ordinary.
  2. Attempts to clear my MIDI interfaces from Windows’ device list via batch script (using Uwe Sieber’s DeviceCleanupCmd.exe) failed with message, "Error 1058 creating system restore point!”

…and several other Windows settings were changed:

  1. Windows’ System Restore was disabled.
  2. Cortana was re-enabled
  3. Some Windows Update options were reset (while others are gone/modified). Specifically, the option, “Do you want to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons available for your devices?” was reset to “yes” while the option to “Choose how updates are installed” is now gone. Hopefully, they simply did away with the option because installing updates without any warning at all isnt ideal, IMHO.
  4. Some Power Management settings were reset. Following the instructions of my audio card manufacturer (Lynx Audio), all of my USB controllers are (or were) configured to disallow the computer to turn them off. All but two of the dozen or so controllers had this option turned back on.

Thankfully, the fixes are pretty straightforward. Re-enable System Restore and “Error 1058” goes away, allowing for scripted removal of MIDI interfaces. Restore power to the interfaces and Windows gets it right; Cubase sends MIDI to the correct interfaces again.

Cortana can no longer be disabled by users directly - it requires a registry hack. Find (or create) a “Windows Search” key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows and add an “AllowCortana” value with DWORD (32-bit) data of 0 (zero).

The rest are self-explanatory. Check your system to be sure your optimizations weren’t reset.

I’ll also mention that my system is performing a bit slower after the update. Prior to updating, my system scored 4724 on PCMark 8. After the update, it dropped to 4695. FWIW.

I hope this is helpful.

Just think this…is there anything in Cubase 9 that I absolutely cannot live without…in my case there is nothing there to tempt me…I reckon 8.5 is where I’ll be staying…

best, Kevin
