If you’re in the UK, Scan should be at, or at least near, the top of your list. Staff are approachable, and (3 years ago when I bought my current PC from them) helpful. If you want something not in the custom option list, they’ll endeavour to get it.
Plus a 24-hour stress test after they’ve put it all together. And not expensive, for what you get - a rock solid PC that works.
I’ve bought 2 from them in 10 years, both faultless. I only bought a new PC because I needed more oomph than the i7 4790 provided.
Yeah, thanks for the info. I’ve heard great things about Scan. The only problem is that I’m in the EU, so the customs charge likely going to be way too much. I ordered a Mandolin once from Switzerland and the customs was around 500 euros; so I guess I have to stick with the EU. Have you heard of anything in the EU like scan?
Even if it’s a pre-built computer, you will most likely still need to tweak some Windows and BIOS settings such as:
BIOS (Recommended by Steinberg):
Disable C-States
BIOS (Optional):
Disable onboard Audio if you’re using a external audio interface
Disable onboard graphics if you’re using a discrete graphic card
Windows (Recommended by Steinberg):
Adjust Windows Power settings (including disabling the USB selective suspend setting)
Disable un-necessary Windows start up apps
Install graphic drivers only without any of the additional software that comes with the driver such as: PhysX, HD Audio Driver, GeForce Experience, NVIDIA App, AMD Settings (formerly Catalyst Control Center) etc.
Windows (Optional):
Disable Windows telemetry
Windows Device Manager / Universal Serial Bus Controllers - Disable the Power Management setting “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
I think that’s about it.
You can ofcourse choose to ignore the above recommendations if your computer is not experiencing any issues with Cubase / real-time audio applications, however these are things to be aware of.
If Cubase continues to performs poorly on your new computer past the above suggestions than you can have a more in depth read through this Steinberg ‘Windows: How to set up and optimize a Digital Audio Workstation Guide’:
If it has issues beyond this than it’s time to start going down the endless rabbit hole and i’ll see you back here on the forums . If this is the case than unfortunately you might have a computer that just doesn’t work well with Cubase for unknown reasons, just like my computer. Then we can be twin brothers
Apart from that Synthmaster test crashing cubase (as we know plugin to blame) since making sure NVIDIA is back on studio not game ready things have been steady so far.
If Synthmaster continues to crash Cubase, you should collect all of the Cubase dump files that were created from Synthmaster crashes and send a bug report and the dump files to the Synthmaster developer directly.
I’ve just noticed something else. I turned off hibernate (powercfg.exe /hibernate off) on windows 11. Before when using cubase If I used stock or user presets for the stock FX the list would be slightly sticky before showing the list of presets. Now with hibernate off the list shows up instantly the second I look.
Edit: Stereo Enhancer plugin is also not getting stuck when trying to close it now.
Edit2: No external midi note issue now also with those old samplers. It seems hibernate was the culprit all this time. Will contact and upate support after I’ve let things run for a bit more.
