Writing, hearing, and mapping a standard jazz drum kit

I am working on my first big band chart in Dorico. I am finding all sorts of ways to make custom MIDI maps and all. But it seems there should be something already defined that maps the notes of General MIDI drums to the default drum kit that I find in the default jazz big band layout. I don’t understand why I can’t hear the ride cymbal. I did find MIDI notes (keys on my controller) that allowed me to enter (and hear) bass and snare, but they are not the General MIDI notes. Why? How to I fix this, surely I shouldn’t have to go through a complex setup just to do what seems should just be the default. Please advise.

What soundset are you using?

You should indeed find that when you write notes into Dorico’s standard Drum set (basic) or Drum set (full) kits, all of the sounds work as you expect out of the box. Can you select the drum kit in the track overview in Play mode, and then look at the Track Inspector to see what VST plug-in is being used? Is it using Groove Agent SE, or HALion Sonic?

Thanks Much!
I must have undone something while flailing around. The Perc Map was set for Groove Agent SE Studio, but the routing wasn’t. It makes perfect sense now - and the keyboard mapping also makes sense (which it never did in Finale).

You guys that hang on the forum are fantastic!
