I have also spent much more time with .10 today and I can report that my ASIO Spikes are also gone now. I changed some BIOS and some Cubase settings which did not improve things with .05 and now, for the first time, I can work reliably with C8. I am happy.
Still getting ASIO spikes here with my UR44, and a slightly worse peak burst is now causing glitches. Have upped the ASIO buffer size to stop glitches but work is still needed to sort this out.
Motif XS VST Editor was also causing C8 to crash on exit several times. I rebooted and tried it again just once and the exit was normal, the timing bug was fixed. Possibly the reboot clean out something not quite finished in the install.
Will see how it goes today and if the problem persists.
I wish there were some better diagnostics than latency mon and dpc checker, they show everything as fine but I can’t find anything to say why there is spiking occurring. I can keep making music though (thanks to ASIO guard) and my C8 workflow is better thanks to the other new features.
Just read about ASIO spikes (solved or not solved) with CB8 Pro & RME.
Since I have yet not worked that much with CB8, could someone of the RME users tell which kind of mentioned “optimizations / teaks” are recommended?
I user a Fireface UC with latest FW & drivers + Windows 7 64 Bit, Intel Xeon E3, Z97 Board.
I disabled Speedstepping, Turbo Boost, C-States & other possbile powersaving options.
I kept Hyperthreading and Thermal CPU Throttling,
RME is setup with 128 Sample buffer, which is fine for me for most recording situations, 44.1 Khz samplerate.
Was even not aware if I ever had suc spikes…just in case…thanks a lot!
MCU problems NOT FIXED! The duplicate master is gone. But the group buttons still don’t work properly, shift/group causes crashes, and input channels never display on the MCU.
Input Channels didn’t show in 7.x, and I like it that way.
I like to see them on the screen (only the ones I’m using) to check levels, but no need for them to take up real estate on my hardware.
Can’t speak to the Group Buttons.
I’ve always hijacked the Fader Bank (group) buttons using a Generic Remote setup - which gives me 8 more function buttons instead.
I use 4 of them for Preset “Configurations” - and this is fine for me - but then I have 4 more function keys - so it works well.
You might try the generic Remote setup to at least get your Fader Bank (group) buttons to work.
You can find it here: Steinberg Forums
It does not have the “Shift” function.
I’m actually quite happy, so far.
Everything seems very smooth - a bit more efficient.
I’m sorry but your tedious inability to appreciate many users legitimate issues does set you up for accusations of being an insensitive fanboy. Perhaps it might be fitting to think a little harder about how other users might be finding things difficult before calling people names. I always try to give people the benefit of doubt, but I am finding it difficult here.
After half a day of twiddling things and half a day of making music with 8.0.10 it has:
made no difference at all to my ASIO spikes, most notably with Kontakt. Halion Sonic 2 still spikes just less dramatic, indeed it spikes when more or less idle. Jumps 25-30% on the realtime meter. I have enough clearance to not glitch but annoying nonetheless.
Motif XS Editor VST as an instrument track intermittently causes a C8 crash on exit
Think I will go to using the Motif XS Editor as an External Instrument.
Still have to live with the ASIO spikes with my UR44. With buffer at 128 it’s just hanging in there with ASIO guard taking the load off the realtime path.
I ran windows resource monitor whilst testing today and it shows Cubase 8 having hard page faults every now and again (only using 50% of RAM). Not sure if this is normal or not but I did try and figure out if they matched the frequency of the ASIO spikes. I couldn’t tell.
What would be really useful diagnostic aid is a log graph of ASIO realtime use rather than a meter.
I’ve made an issue report about the Shift+Fade banks. (which AlakaLazlo has confirmed as well). Not sure why it’s ended up in the “Issue Reports > Miscellaneous”? Anyway:
Would be great if others could chime in as well so we could have this looked at by SB.
All this waiting and that terrible global menu bar is still there. May not seem like a huge problem but it’s very annoying to have to deal with, and completely kills my workflow. Scroll bars are still tiny and hard to use, off-center titles in the title bar. Guess I gotta wait till I have to pay another $50 for Cubase Pro 8.5 to MAYBE get a well designed piece of software.
I’m going to regret asking this, but how exactly does it “completely kill” your workflow? Occasionally I find I have to click a specific pane the window task bar to get things back in focus, but I guesstimate the sum total of the time I spend with Cubase on menu bar related issues is around 0.01%.
The off-centre titles is to do with font scaling - if you HAVE to font scale I can see that’s an issue.
I do a lot of mixing work (cubase) and I do a lot of sound design type work (reaper/pro tools) at the same time with different drivers. I’m constantly minimizing and switching windows and it’s a huge pain to have to deal with the menu bar being there all the time. It’s all muscle memory at this point and having to remember to right click and choose “MINIMIZE ALL” after standard minimize button fails annoys me very much. The last thing I need while working 19 hours a day is to get angry every time I notice a “pro” level piece of software failing to do what a 1st year computer science major makes sure his programs do.
It’s similar (although to a much lesser extent) to the annoyance I feel because Cubase 8 chooses to have the “Show Status Line” option at the very top of the right click popup menu. I don’t use the toolbox, I like to right click and change tools from the menu, so instead of the top being “Object Selection” it’s now a function that shows/hides the status bar, which thanks to 15 years of muscle memory, is a huge pain in the ass.
It’s like if someone put a tripwire in front of your door. All you have to do is take an extra step but you’re so used to it not being there that it can very easily start to bother you.
