Audio problem upon startup after headphone use previous session

Whenever I want to use audio from my laptop’s speakers after having used headphones the night before, I can’t hear the audio until I re-insert the 8mm plug into the headphone socket on my laptop and remove it again–then it works fine.
This manual workaround is fine whenever I have this 8mm headphone plug available. Recently I didn’t, however, and it was a problem.
Why does this happen? Is it something I’m doing wrong?
Thank you!

Could you please do that procedure once more and then do from Dorico’s menu ‘Help > Create Diagnostics Report’ and post the corresponding zip file here? Thanks

Ulf. I have not experienced this problem again since telling you about it! I will keep this in mind for future problems: Just let Ulf know, and the problems will likely run away on their own

Could life not always be that easy? Just telling someone about your problems and they are gone…

Here ya go. It happened again. Thanks Ulf!

Here’s another diagnostics report after I inserted an 8mm adapter into the headphone jack and pulled it back out and then I could hear the sound. (Not sure if the DR will be any different, but what do I know?)

HI @wrldwdarr ,

yes, I can see a difference in the logs. After you started up again, Dorico’s audio engine could not “see” the built-in audio device and therefore all the output went into void.
After inserting and pulling out however, the audio engine receives a message from the operating system, that a new devices is available and the audio engine immediately takes and uses it, so audio comes out.

I don’t know , but it looks somehow like a problem on the operating system side. We can only connect to ports that are actually seen by our software. If we don’t get a notification that a device is available, well, what can we do?

If you go to Edit > Device Setup and there click on the Control Panel button, in the little window that pops up, how does it look like in the different scenarios. Could you make screenshorts, please.

Thank you
Ulf

Well, it worked this time upon startup (laptop speakers automatically sounded w/out the 8mm adapter work-around).
But anyway, here’s the requested screenshot.
Next time it happens , I’ll re-send.

Yes, please, go on.

Alright, so above is the diagnostics for now when I’ve opened my laptop, started up dorico, opened up a file and I get no playback sound.
And here is the screenshot while the issue is present.

I can see the problem already: no blue checkbox under “Output”.
So now I know the work-around (for when I don’t have an 8mm headphone adapter handy.)
Any suggestion for altering my settings so that I don’t need to use the workaround?
Thanks!

Actually, I don’t know. I’ve tried on my M1 MacMini again, and here it works as expected…

Hi @wrldwdarr you can try unchecking Automatic Configure Devices. I use it in this setting and never had problems.

(you have to set the Format in the Audio-Midi setup on macOS)

I have always had Automatically Configure Devices checked, But as I have described in at least five previous threads in the past 2½ years, Dorico sends output to whichever I used the last time I ran it, speakers or headphones. If it’s not the same as the last time I quit, plugging or unplugging the headphones resets it. So far no one has replied to my mentioning this, to say whether anyone else has this situation, or whether anything can be done about it.

Thanks, but that wasn’t the problem. I had that selected already.

@Ulf – Did you see this? Sounds like there’s an automatic “last used” process in Dorico that overrides the “Automatically Configure Devices” selection in the CoreAudio Device Settings on Apple Intel-based computers…

I mean to deactivate Automatically Configure Devices (as in my picture).

Sorry, I missed that posts. I have the Automatically Configure Devices deactivated: I leave the Core Audio Settings Output on headphones and to switch between headphones or speakers I use Loopback on MacOs, very comfortable. (Not sure if this can be of some help)

Hi @wrldwdarr (and everyone else here). Actually, I can’t follow any more.
On my M1 MacMini, when “Automatically configured Device” is switched off, Dorico’s output will not follow the plugging of a headphone. It also can’t, because from ASIO’s perspective there is only 1 device (Built-in Audio) with no distinction between headphone and mic. So consequently it does not follow the headphones being plugged in or not.
The “Automatically configure Device” option is only pertinent for Built-in Audio devices and when active, Dorico follows the plugging state of a headphone.
Even if I close Dorico with headphones connected and after closing unplugging them, on next start-up Dorico will correctly play out via built-in loudspeakers.
I’ve once more exercised the whole thing again, just to confirm.

For me, it does so while Dorico is running, but not at startup.

For me it also does so at startup
