Cubase 13 not showing videos

Thank you for saying “fewer” and not “less”!!!

That’s a good one!

For those who don’t know:

Linguistic prescriptivists usually say that fewer and not less should be used with countable nouns, and that less should be used only with uncountable nouns. (Wikipedia)

Hi all
I’m using Cubase 13 and unfortunately I am unable to view videos - (the thumbnails show but the playback window is black)
Could anyone recommend a good graphic card that would enable me to use video… the PC is not used for anything other than Music and some internet browsing…no games.

Tia.

Hello back! I’m afraid no one can make a serious recommendation based on your request. There are too many unanswered questions. Questions like: Which computer (specification)? AMD or rather nVidia? What do you want to spend? I use a somewhat outdated Radeon RX 5700 XT, but it is sufficient for my purposes and I can also play “the video” with it.

Hi ASM, Don’t really have a budget in mind. I see that the Redion RX 5700 are around £175 - though you say it’s out dated… I guess if I look for an equivalent that’s more upto date that would be ok.
So I guess the budget is around £200.
I’m just a tad worried that if I spend that much and Cubase still doesn’t show vids. :grimacing:

You haven’t yet told us what your current computer configuration is. You have only told us that it’s a PC.

  • What are you currently using to see any video output?
  • Is it a discrete graphics card or are you using the CPU integrated video?
  • What CPU?
  • What version of Windows?

… etc.

For just playing video any graphics card should be more than adequate for the task.

Also I wouldn’t assume your problem is because your on-board graphics are lacking - unless your PC is super old.

It’s not new that’s for sure, it’s an i7 and it handles capture 3D Visualization software ok. I installed loads of codecs today and also exported an mp4 in ice cream video converter for windows as an mp4 but still the same…thumbnails show but video display screen black… All vids play on Cubase 13 on my MacBook, and they all play in everything on the PC except Cubase…

So you’re using the integrated graphics of the i7 then?

You might tell is which i7 CPU you have (look in Task Manager / Performance tab). Most i7s should be able to handle Cubase video playback without any problems.

You could try the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to make sure you have the most up-to-date graphics drivers installed.

I made a thread about this and have commented a lot - it’s not about how good your GPU is. I have an AMD 7900 XTX (top of AMD’s consumer range?) and it won’t play any mp4 files in Cubase. It does play MOV video files. My previous AMD 6700 XT played video as expected.
Steinberg, along with a lot of other changes, changed the way the video engine in Cubase 13 works, it’s there on the New Features section.
@andyp13 just needs a list of GPUs that you guys have used that can actually play back mp4 video.

Don’t buy a video card, that is not the problem. That’s all I can say at the moment.

So inscrutable! Ah well, here’s hoping.

@andyp13 you really should download the recommended app and convert your video to Apple Prores and see if it works.

Is this for PC? - Iv tried about every format there is and the results always the same.
Iv installed codecs, and also uploaded part of the video to see if other users can play it and they can…the only thing Iv not done is changed the graphic card… the issue is that vids have always played back on all versions of Cubase except 13 (for me anyway)…

Well, for starters, have you already done a clean install of Windows and Cubase?

From where though? Freebies? Some so-called “codecs” will play havoc with Windows installations.

Perhaps I’ve missed it, but amazingly, with all these people spending their free time attempting to help you, you still haven’t even told us what your PC spec is … other than it’s a i7 CPU. If you want to go ahead and spend your money on graphics card and compound the problems, nobody will stop you; but there cheaper and easier solutions.

For those insisting that it’s a CODEC issue:

When I used to use an AMD 6700 XT GPU I had no issues. A few months ago changed it for an AMD 7900 XTX. Issues! My issue is flashing greens as in the video. Used to have the same issue in my web browsers (Edge, Firefox, Vivaldi all Chrome) until I turned off hardware acceleration in those browsers.
NO mp4 will play in Cubase 13, not downloaded files, not videos recorded on my phone, not videos I create in VEGAS.. MOV files do. All mp4s play in Cubase 12 and earlier.
The Cubase 13 New Features page states that the video engine has been tweaked.
My PC: i9 12900, Win 10, Cubase 13.0.40, 12.0.70, 11 something. Windows is up to date. I tried AMD drivers from the past year, Pro as well as consumer.
These are your clues! Watch the short video!

I use the K-Lite codec pack, and a codec from the MS store for AV1 files.

Hi Google
Done all that you have suggested, used K-lite and also bought codecs from Microsoft but still the same…I can view the thumbnails but playback is black

To quote myself:

If you can use Cubase 12, I’d do that.

It seems that you and I are the only Cubase users that cannot play videos in Cubase 13.

Is this real? Are you trying to fool us? There is no Intel HD4600…

Are we talking a different language here?
Can you provide the system specs please?

RAM:
Mainboard:
Graphics hardware:

Use HWiNFO to get this information.

Your graphics hardware isn’t capable of hardware accelerated playback. It’s too old. That is what we are guessing. We have no idea what your actual hardware is, because you didn’t mentioned your system specs, as already asked for in the first answer from @stingray.
