Cubase 14 & 15 "stuttering" on Mac

Hi,
as far as I know, Cubase 15 and macOS 26.4 now works as expected. We are not aware of any “stuttering” issues with this combination. If you have “UI stuttering” in this combination, then the reason is a different one and is most likely a third party plug-in issue. If you are in such a situation, please close one plug-in window after another until the stuttering is gone. The last closed plug-in is most likely the reason for the stuttering. If you still have the “stuttering” without plug-in editors open, get in touch with our support staff.

Cheers

Problem still persist on Tahoe 26.4 and Cubase version 14.

I’m getting the stuttering gfx plugin windows too? Disabling GPU acceleration instantly makes my plugins respond smooth again. So, what’s up?!

I just tested Nuendo 14 on MacOS Tahoe 26.5 and the Stutter is still there…

This must be a different issue, this thread is Mac only

This is on a Mac. MacBook Pro M2 Max.

Oh right, I glanced over your comment too quickly. Yes, the bug also includes especially gfx intensive plugins. Almost every plugin, really. Afaik Arturia and Fabfilter plugin UI’s are affected…and any synth plugin window with a somewhat graphically pleasing interface.

My “temporary” hack so far has been to keep the channel inspector on “window always on top” and keeping it at the top of my screen while I display all the other plugins further down on my screen to avoid them overlapping with the inspector window. GPU disabling helps but only in some rare cases. It also takes some of your CPU power away, which I need when working on bigger projects.

Yeah, I’ve not noticed much in terms of CPU power being diminished but after testing, disabling GPU acceleration always makes things smooth and lag/stutter free again. This is is new projects, existing projects etc. The problem is that certain windows then don’t redraw properly, such as the pattern editor.

Just installed MacOS27

The problem seems a little less worse now? I am having less stutter, however if the plugin window is directly on top of the EQ, there is a bit of lag. If it just overlaps slightly, the lag is not present - at least here on my M4 Max. Will test on the M1 Ultra tomorrow.

UPDATE:

Installed OS27 on my M1 Mac Studio Ultra.

Stutter is partially gone - now present only in very specific scenarios.

If you overlap the plugin window over the inspector window in a way that it only covers the Equalizer, UI element animations start to stutter.

If you cover the whole window, UI element just work smoothly.

Here is me messing around with the windows.

Different story during regular playback:

If you keep a loop playing and start moving the plugin window on over of the inspector window, keeping it partially visible, stutter is present.

If you cover the inspector window completely, the system stutters initially - then after a short while it seems to “refresh” and the lag is suddenly gone.

This is all in Nuendo 14, not sure about Cubase/Nuendo 15…

To me this is acceptible at the moment and it feels like OS27 is a lot smoother and less error-ridden than the previous release. I will keep testing and report back if anything pops up.

Note: After installation, you will need to re-install Rosetta.

Goldengate is dealing with some severe issues around Spaces and Mission Control it seems. Apps are losing their internal Spaces ID after a sleep or reboot of the mac. Just leaving this here in case you’re wondering how it is going.

I am otherwise having no larger issues with Nuendo on Goldengate :ok_hand:

…is not the panacea it’s made out to be. It should be possible to disable it within Cubase.
I’m going to say it:
Other programs allow it to be disabled!
There, I said it.
