Dorico too large for monitor in German edition

Hi @BerlinTS

adding to what @Mark_Johnson very usefully suggested:
Tempo markings are System Objects, and, as other System Objects, can be shown on the first staff of defined instrument families, from Layout Options>Staves and Systems>System Objects (in your case check Keyboards).

But they will always appear also on the top staff . There is a workaround to drag them out of the page in Engrave mode, if really necessary :wink: :

Thank you both very much. Alas I have another problem: inputing an Italian text I have two words “Ma il” that have to fit under one note. In finale there is an alt-number which makes this possible. I hope Dorico also has a solution.

Shift+Option(Alt)+Space for non breaking space in Lyrics input.

Here the Manual:

Excerpt:

And when you want an elision ‿ just type underscore _ into the popover!

Thanks to you both. Everything worked.
However I have another problrm: I’m inputting a piece for Voice, Frauen Choir and piano. The Frauen Choir only sings in bars 22 -25. In engrave mode I changd the brace for the Choir part for a thick straight line. This has somehoe managed to delete the piano brace from the piano part in the score untill the end of the piece. I have not found anyway the reverse this. Haave you a solution?

Instead of using a bracket and brace change in Engrave mode, try editing the instrument definition for the Choir (reduction) instrument in Library > Instruments to use a bracket rather than a brace.

Thank you, I proceded as instructed. Unfortunately when I tried to leave the library (with the changed bracket in the choir {reduction in score} ) Dorico crashed. This has happened twice. Any suggestions.? I tried to leave the library with the escape and with the tab key. Was that wrong?

Apparently the file was defect and not repairable. I opened a new file and copied the music from the old file and everything is OK. Brackets the way I want them.
But another question: is it possible to input fermatas individually? Sometimes Dorico’s automatismus drives me nuts. Finale was in this regard more flexible…

The “real” fermatas in Dorico have a musical meaning. That is why they follow certain rules.
Still, you can also be flexible when using Dorico:

  1. Create a Playing Technique with the fermata symbol.
  2. You can put this exactly where you like (Write Mode).
  3. Adjust to your liking. It’s a job you will do in Engrave Mode.

Thank you, but unfortunately I haven’t fond a way to set a fermata sign into playing techniques. I’m new to this coming from Finale. Could you be a bir more specific? Step by step?

Switch to Write Mode.
There is an area in the right panel with Playing Techniques, sorted by instrument categories.
Just press the little “+” button to create a new Playing Technique.
Give it a name. In the dialogue you have to change the Type from “Text” to “Glyph” and look for the Fermata Glyph (Holds and Pauses).
You specify a popover text (which will trigger this specific “playing technique”, for example “fer”). Save and exit.
Next time you need a special fermata, select a note, press shift-p and fer, followed by enter. Your graphical fermata will be put above that note and you can (in Engrave Mode) change it’s exact position.
It is worth reading about this and watching tutorial videos, like this one (it’s from Dorico version 2, but still has all the basic information presented in a nice, polite and helpful way):

Thaks a lot. It took me a while but I finally got it. You guys in the english help web site are really good, a blessing for people like me!

Here I am with two more problems.:

  1. I have a piece with two verses (Lyric 1 and Lyric 2). In the last bar of a system and until the end of the piece Lyric 2 ends and Lyric 1 is sung until the end. In Finale I can move Lyric 1 half way down between where Lyric 1 and lyric 2 would normally be in just the aforementioned bar . I tried this in Dorico but was not able to move the Lyic in one bar without moving it in the whole piece. Is there anyway in Dorico to do this? I solved tthis by shoving the measure into the next system but the layout was better before.
  2. I’m completely lost with Dorico’s mixer and sounds. I started a piece for string orchestra and the sound is very weak even after I input a fortissimo. Also the attack is strange, the sound starts off very weak and then there is a slight crescendo until what I assume is the full sound. is heard. .My amplifier has not been working lately. Could that be the cause? My sound interface is a Steinberg UR242. Can you recommend a tutorial or video for the mixer? Even though English is my native tongue I don’t understand many of the terms used in the mixer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For #1, you can put the syllable in another voice. Then it can be moved independently.

For mixer and sound issues I defer to others …

I’ve been away for some time and I don’t know how start a new topic. I hope you can help me here with a new problem. I have a piece for organ and clarinet. In tthe clarinet part there are some quarter tones. L have spent two days reading dorico help files and watching videos. The peice is atonal (set up from measure 1 and also in the clarinet part where the first quartger tone appears to boot. However when I click on a quarter tone Doriico springs back from 24 EOD to 12 EOD and no quartertone accidental appears.
I’d be very greatfull for any solution.

Bless you, sir!

Thanks again for your help. Another question: is it possible to program tuplets under a certain key. i.e. under number keys? The piece that I_m working on has so many tuplets it would save me a lot of time if I could for example hit 1 - f0r 3:2 tuplet, 2 - for 5:4, 3 - for 6:4, 4 - for 7:6, 8 - for 9:8 et cetera. Hope I’m not asking for too much.

I have seen some threads on setting up new shortcuts for tuplets, but I haven’t tried them myself. One thing you could do to save time is to click on an existing tuplet; then option- (or alt on Windows) click to copy it to a new place, and then repitch the notes, by typing L (Lock Duration) in input mode.

If you type ; by itself, the default is a triplet. Since this is the most common tuplet for many pieces, I use it often and it’s fast.

You can add these tuplet commands to a shortcut key if you’re comfortable editing JSON files. Here’s a post of mine which discusses the process.

In this case, instead of the text "Script.RunScript?ScriptPath=C:/path/to/myscript.lua", you would want to use something like "NoteInput.StartTupletRun?Definition=5:4e" to set up, for example, a 5:4 eighth note tuplet.

{
    "context" : "kWriteMode",
    "shortcuts" : [

        {
            "NoteInput.StartTupletRun?Definition=5:4e" : [ "CTRL+2" ]
        },

You could add as many of these as you like; you just need to be careful not to conflict with existing key commands.
