I’ve only recently found that there is an update to HALion 7 called HALion 7.5
According to Dom, it’s free but when I go to the Steinberg site, it’s not free. You have to pay for it.
Was it a one day free event?

He must have been referring to Halion Sonic.
Halion itself is not free.
While Halion itself isn’t free moving from Halion 7 to 7.5 was free for me.
If you already own Halion 7 (not Halion sonic) the Halion 7.5 is a free update.
It’s time they changed the name of Sonic. Current names cause too much confusion.
HALion Sonic Selection and HALion Sonic Collection - how are you supposed to know which one you have to pay $200 for?
Speaking of which: Is the HS Selection free for all, or just Cubase owners. (I have the full HALion, FYI and BTW and TTFN.)
- HALion Sonic Selection is a small selection of sounds which are part of the full HALion library.
- HALion Sonic 7.5 Collection is the free HALion Sonic but with the full 35 GB HALion Library. Consider it a middle version of HALion.
- HALion 7.5 is the full software.
Of course, the current HALion Sonic should not be confused with HALion Sonic 3, which is a separate product.
Agreed. It’s totally incomprehensible to normal people.
They should rename HALion Sonic to “HALion Light” or “HALion Player”.
I’ve never understood why companies are so against making their product tiers understandable.
Dom sometimes forgets he owns plugins and says they are free when in actual fact the UPDATES are free but the initial license is not.

And that further confusion happens when Steinberg goes:
“What if we sell all the sounds that come with HALion but you can’t create instruments?”
Because the only thing you’re buying with the Sonic Collection is the HALion library. Just call it by what it is. Imagine, say, Native Instruments making something like Komplete Collection, which is all the Komplete stuff but without the full versions of Reaktor and Kontakt.
Does he, though? In the video that I watched he says “free update for all Halion 7 customers”.
I thought that’s what he said too, and I own HALion 7. But on the Steinberg site it’s not free.
I’m not paying for something that I don’t use all the time.

you are probably looking at the wrong spot. According to your first post, you already own Halion 7 (no further last name like Sonic, just Halion 7). In this case, you don’t have to go to Steinberg’s website because you already own Halion 7. Just open the Steinberg Download Assistant, go to “My Products” and click on Halion 7. Now, you’ll see the free download for Halion 7.5 on the right hand side:

It’s not a new issue with Steinberg. I wonder what their logic is on this?
I’ve found with clients that message simplicity and clarity can make them quite nervous. They feel more “protected” with lots of vague and often useless verbiage between them and their clients. Perhaps it makes them feel that their offering is worth less than if there are just one or two clear sentences?
Perhaps its like changing from being in a loud band to a solo act with a guitar. You’re really naked up there. There’s no way of hiding with you’re “off”.
I don’t think the vague naming of products is helping them any.
Didn’t they have 8 variants of Cubase at some point?
Certainly confusing names to people who are not customers (which is really the one target you should care about)
They managed to get it down to just five.
I think some folks probably wouldn’t really mind that as they only every use Kontakt as a player device. But NI has always made you buy the full version of Kontakt if you want to play samples that are not part of the official NI catalog (sold for Kontakt Player). Where as at least Steinberg lets you play any sample patches in whatever version of Halion you have a license for. Granted if NI did that they would make it just as confusing as Steinberg has more than likely. Point is, there are good and bad points and while confusing, I think Steinberg is more fair with their licensing that NI is. And most importantly, when you do buy the full Halion, they don’t make some sample packs inferior and not show up in the search tools in the same manner, as NI does, just because they didn’t get a mark up by selling the sample pack in their store.
