Insert Plugin Rename feature

I’ve encountered a very inconvenient problem while mixing and mastering tracks in Cubase. Each time I open channel settings, in the list of inserts I see similar plugins that are responsible for different purposes, i.e. 2 identical equalizers, 1 of which is for sidechaining and another one is for cleaning unnecessary frequencies, etc. and I cannot rename them to see what each insert does what.
Lots of people from Steinberg Forum (even since Cubase 10!) encountered a similar issue when they cannot rename the plugins on Inserts to have the project even more organized. From my understanding and some experience in programming, I understand that this feature will not be too hard of a task to implement it in the future updates.
If possible, can you please make it as a free update for Cubase 13, at least for the pro version?

The community will really appreciate this gesture.

We’ve been asking for this for years.

Steinberg seems to make a point of ignoring anything we mention here, which is fun.

One EASY step that could be done by Steinberg is allow us to use the VST plugin Manager to add a column with User-Defined-Name to FX and VSTis.

So we could rename offending plugins such as : “AmazingCompanyFantasticCompressorHQX123”
to
“HQX123”

Non-renamed plugins use default name. Done.
Does not solve renaming within each projects, but would help already.
For your specific issue, perhaps an alternative is to consider using different EQs for different purposes, adapt your workflow.

I’m new here and in absolute shock as to how long this has been requested and ignored.

I don’t even think it’s especially hard to do, but there are a ton of things (basic audio tools) that have been requested for over 10 years now.

FYI @noise
@deadautomatic revived a couple of old threads on this subject - here’s his own and current thread on the topic:

@deadautomatic I can understand that you want to bring more attention to this topic by doing this but it might have been sufficient to attach links to these old threads?

Sufficient maybe, but sufficient doesn’t make as strong of a point as Steinberg having to look at ancient threads of a basic feature request that has yet to be fulfilled.

@noise That’s very disheartening. What are some of the other long requested features that are absent?

Except this is a user forum. Sure, some SB people are active here (which is nice), but I believe @Reco29’s point is that finding several other old threads and posting the same thing in each one of them wasn’t really necessary from a “forum etiquette” perspective. SB doesn’t “have to look at” anything here. Just letting you know that bit

I see your point. I thought mods and a dev rep frequented here. My apologies for that then.

No worries at all - I should have started with “welcome to the forum” since you said you’re relatively new

It’s all good - this is (mostly) a great place where we can all share ideas, methods, workflows, and even a good joke now and then. Great group of folks here, so welcome again, and I hope you find it to be a great resource!

He’s been here longer than you, so: Welcome to the forum @Thor.HOG !
Have a Sunday beer. :clinking_beer_mugs:

Oh, I lurked way before I joined
But thank you!! Yay for me!

EDIT: What’s sad is I LOOKED, saw June 2024 and was like, “Oh, last month.” It’s crazy that we’re already halfway through 2025 man. Crazy, I say.

I think the only one who has almost reached the legal age to have a drink here is me. Since both of you are still toddlers, @Googly_Shakespeare just turned 2, you could ask me nicely if I’d buy you a drink with my fake ID. I just turned 14 but I look 5 years older. Max.

By the time I reach that landmark I’ll be 83! Cor blimey!

Bless you!
Looking at some user’s bios here - there are loads of experienced users like you who have been around since the Atari days. So, forum membership doesn’t equal experience, of course it doesn’t. I have no idea how they dealt with old forum accounts - I think there once was another Steinberg forum if I am not mistaken.

There are a ton. Being able to have meters behave like VU meters (which are standard on mixing desks for a reason), adding a tag we can put on posts in the forum, indicating which OS is used when asking the forum for tech support.

The last one is the most baffling. It would take 30 mins and really help both SB and the users (so we don’t have to ask what people are running all the time). Can’t for the life of me figure out why they wouldn’t (perhaps make it too easy to see which platform has more support issues?)

SB often builds its rod for its own back

Yes, second that - these things would really benefit the forum :+1:
I had a look at other forums, e.g. UAD (love many of their plugins) - it could be much worse. Compare their functionality to ours - what a huge difference. Again, I would love to see the improvements you mentioned but it could be much worse. Basically, Steinberg put a lot of thought into designing this forum - I must give tbem that! But we are digressing…

Just to be clear, Steinberg did not design these forums. They’re using the open source community platform Discourse.

Yes, I should have been more specific. You’ll find a lot of foums being based on discourse’s platform. Discourse let’s you customize the platform and offers a huge variety of in-depth options. My bad, I should’ve written Steinberg put a lot of TLC into designing this forum based on Discourse’s platform. Good point, @mlib :+1:
