I know there have been lots of previous threads for this request dating back at least a decade. I’m starting a new one just to promote a more exact protocol request, just in case the old threads have fallen off the dev reading radar.
If this were to be implemented, imo, this would be the best protocol:
- Plugin-Manager - ‘Plugin Name Show As’
- Users enter this name in Plugin-Manager. It’s a global name setting.
- This becomes the new default Insert Display name that appears when the user adds the plugin to the insert.
- Manual Rename of Insert In Project.
- Users can manually rename inserts in a project per channel, per insert - saved with the project. (doesn’t change globally in project, nor Cubase app)
Example:
Oxford EQ Native
I rename global default in Plugin-Manager to Oxf-EQ
I add Oxford EQ Native to an insert, it shows as Oxf-EQ.
I want to rename that particular plugin for that particular insert for this particular project for the particular track - I right click on the insert and select ‘Rename Local’, and name it to Oxf-EQ NotchFix
searching:
In my opinion, Plugin names should be unchanged from their stock/file name in add plugin/insert selection/search list - but perhaps in the background, the ‘Show As’ name could also be part of search filter. ie, I can search ‘Oxford Eq’ or ‘Oxf-Eq’ and get the same search filter result.
On a side note/feature request, if inserts become text functional like this - hypothetically, Project Logical Editor could target/action them.
