I knew a muso from Nantucket
When a MIDI note jammed, he’d unstuck it,
He played a mean guitar,
When noise arrived from afar,
He’d reverse the coils and buck it!
I thought the good old days were when the Atari and Pro24 were hot
I wonder what happened to “Brains” (and all his variants) and Conman? Had many a spat with them, Paul Woodlock was usually there to pour petrol on the flames. Paul was merciless (and very knowledgeable) and frequently mentioned Brains’ “rubber drum kit”.
I miss the trolls! And Evil Child, and Paul and Mike E. Learned about 80% of what I know now engineering/mixing wise from the great tips these guys posted. More orderly here now, but also much more boring. A bit sterile
I’ve been around the Cubase forum in its various incarnations since 1998. That was indeed a heady time – the simultaneous explosion of two relatively new technologies, the Internet and the DAW, brought all kinds of peeps to the forums. When I first got here, there wasn’t any “lounge” per se – people posted all their extraneous stuff in the Cubase for Windows section (if I recall). When that became unmanageable, the powers that be added the Lounge section. When Azlbrax finally got banned, chams (a dude from Canada) started an alternative forum called thisplace.ca that took the insanity to new levels, since the moderation was purposefully light-handed. There have been at least 4 other break-away forums since that one, including Nerg’s, JC’s “Ethel Merman” site, Smeggy’s, and another one that me, Paul, Bill, and Kevin (Dark Irish) spent a fair amount of time at (I can’t recall who started that one, however – I think it actually may in fact have been Bill himself). Of all the old-timers, I still interact with Woodlock almost every day, Kim (UnkelGrusom) pretty often using Facebook’s imitation-Skype app, as well as Nick occasionally. Lenny Lee used to be on Facebook on a regular basis, but I rarely see him anymore. I know surfer, Mr. Mahogany, and HowlingUlf are still around here, and they were there way back when. But yes, I remember many many names – seems like a long time ago, but I guess it wasn’t THAT long ago. If I tried to list all the ones I recall, it would be really long. Maybe in my spare time I’ll do that –
BTW – Mark R Hodge was right about not singing falsetto. He was a counter-tenor (although most modern countertenors employ falsetto). The thing about him is that he had Asperger’s Syndrome

I’ve been on the forums since the late 90s. I don’t come around much anymore as it seems like this forum has become too sterile. I spend more time on Gearslutz. The music I do has changed a bit too. I used to do a lot of midi creations back in the day. Now, I do more remote recordings for local churches and schools. I have an extensive remote rig at this point which I love to take out and use to record live performances.
One of my favorite posters from back in the day was Subpantellis (hopefully I spelled that right). At the start of each weekend he would release some sort of bizarre poll, which was often very entertaining.
One other event that stands out in my mind was the creation of many threads that did not contain subject lines, making them very difficult to get into. Mods really got pissed over that one.
One of the more enjoyable moments for me was meeting up with Midi Madness in CA when I was out that way. You never know what you’re gonna find when you meet someone you only know from the internet. He was (is) a great relaxed guy who was really into midi!
I also enjoyed meeting Tom Zartle (WoodCrest) to buy his Event ASP8s from him. Was a little nervous meeting Tom too as you never know what people are like until you meet the in the flesh. I almost soiled myself when I got to his house and saw his massive dog (which could have easily eaten me for dinner)! But I still bought the speakers which are my primary monitors at this point.
Yeah, I used to live primarily in the Cubase MIDI Device Panel Sticky, which despite not being overly popular was quite important and productive in terms of providing a lot of Cubase users with the means to expand the usefulness of both Cubase and their hardware.
Awesome to hear this again. Good to see you still here Nick. How are things with you? Is your woman getting down with you these days? I love that verse. Man there was some talent on that track. Numnutz really tore it up in the outro.
Are Glyn and Sherz hangin out here anymore? I make a point to drop in a couple of times a year, but since the kids came along, time for making music is scarce. I should get back into it, but part of me has taken an interest in being a luthier, as a hobby anyway.
Yeah, it was a little more fun back then. I guess most people realize this is Steinberg ground now and not the wild west of the interwebs like it was on cubase.net and all those places. so who do I remember that I don’t think is mentioned too many times already?
PHIL EXPERT very helpful but not so knowledgable haha! wow!
Then there was this other guy a lot of people suspected was a resurected PHIL EXPERT, but I guess he wasn’t after all? Also very “Helpful”!
Martin Brown (aka LeedsQuietman aka LQM) who died from auto immune disorder around the age of 40 maybe in 2010 around the winter holidays! Kind of hurt my head to read! Then his mother died while preparing for the funeral for his son, or something like that?
Donovan played some good guitar stuff but got unlucky with the USB-dongle and dropped out. He had some horror inspired nickname?
the fella who signed of his post with greetings to all dudes and dudettes, and made some extremely funky kind of electronic stuff on VST32. What happened to him?
Jack the man who can’t sang but seemed kind of happy anyway? and it was him who said he couldn’t sing!!!
Eilen(?) from Wien, Chairman of the bored, drfunk and MrGroove changed their names and stopped typing?
Hackenslash? A real singer!!!
Oh, before I forget it, Happy Birthday, Neil!
And Bill and Nate and some other silly bastards we used to love before they got themselves banned all over again haha! Not sure I see the point, but that’s the way they’re made?
Mark the troubadour with the earthquake inducing vibrato
he use to reinvent himself and pop up every once in a while.
Some people with no name (in my memory)
The french guy who made epic film score music like others poke their noses haha! What happened to him?
And that I think Australian guy who just couldn’t stop emitting the most insanely accurate and useful advice in almost every post he wrote. He sort of vaporized rigtht around the time I got here. MrAntonio? We should try to clone him … if we can find him. Kind of the antithesis of PHIL EXPERT haha!
some people I wish I could forget
The orange guy who just knew best all the time and thought he was the brain police or something! Total weirdo!
conman and brains are two other I wonder why, just why? No, actually I don’t haha!
But the rest I kind of miss! Even if you were wrong all the time and I was always right!
I didn’t think anyone remembered him except myself since he was sort of a flash in the pants… Do you remember his final confession on the Cubase forum before he vanished?
WHAT? NO!
I’m almost sure I missed that one?
No, I take that back!
There was something he said, but I’ve forgotten what it was.
He explained his situation, right?
So … what was it?
I think Sherz pops in from time to time but only in the ‘Made with Cubase’ section - though I might be out of date with my info. I’m on Skype with him from time to time where I am constantly blown away by each next improvement in his photography. Ah! Found it:
Me, I’m around here but am more active reviewing works-in-progress on a writers’ forum I’m member of. Musically, apart from live work, I’ve been mainly teaching myself violin and percussion which, apart from early and premature exhuberance a few years ago, needs a lot more work before being ready to record. I did, however get busy in February this year:For Colleen, the lady who, as of Sept 5th is my wife.
I hope everything is good with you and yours, Vaughn. And also best wishes to everyone else here.
