The blanks are for students to write things like the degree of the staff, note duration, etc.
In Finale, I could do this easily by simply inputting underscores in the lyrics. In Dorico, however, it seems it interprets it as some other symbol, which I’m honsestly not even sure what is.
I got around it by doing staff attached text (Shift+X) instead, but I still wonder if it would be possible to do it with lyrics. There would be some advantages, such as the blanks being automatically centered under the notes.
If there is a different way altogether to do this type of thing, I’d be happy to know about that too! Thanks in advance.
Interesting… thanks for the help, though it seems easier to just keep doing what I’ve been doing. Seems to me there should be a setting where users could choose whether they want an underscore or the elision slur. I’ve never needed an elision slur. Oh, well, it works for now.
Could you use an “em-dash” instead? On a Windows keyboard, using the numbers keypad, hold down the Alt key and type 151 ([alt]-151) on the numeric pad. (It won’t work with the alpha keyboard numbers.) I’m not sure how on a Mac, though you could cut and paste from a word processor,
I realize that it’s not on the baseline but it might work for your example.
Michael, You’re absolutely correct about needing the “0”!
My bad.
The correct code is [alt]-0151. Without the 0 you will get nothing!
(All those codes require four digits - typically with the leading 0, to work. I don’t think it’s a country thing but I could be wrong - I’ve only used US keyboards - I think it’s a data coding thing.)
Thanks for the correction!
That could be another option. One issue with not having it on the baseline is that I often type in the answers for the first one, so that wouldn’t be aligned vertically with the blanks like it should. Thanks for the suggestion, though!
In the paragraph style for lyrics, how about toggling on the underline, and then entering non-breaking spaces for the lyrics? In the example, I used five non-breaking spaces (on Mac, Option+Shift+Space) to create the blanks.
Ah, that is exactly what I need! Thanks a million! Having just come over to Dorico, I wasn’t even familiar with the paragraph styles options. This improves the look of any answers I fill in for a reference, as they now also have “blanks” under them (underlines), which makes it look like they were actually filled in after the fact on the worksheet spaces. I don’t think I’ll get much better than this. Thanks for chiming in with this, @BrooksDaniel-Hoste!
