Confusing statement for eLicensers

Continuation of the discussion from Update on eLicenser Service Ends in 2025:

@Ed_Doll I just read the announcement and this point is confusing. On one hand you say updates and upgrades are possible only if the eLicenser is registered before May 20, 2025.
In the next sentence you say eLicensers can still be registered after end of the service, so I can add a new eLicenser?

Can you please clarify what this exactly means? Will it be possible to register a spare USB elicenser after May 20, 2025 or not?

It says “You need to reactivate a Soft-eLicenser-based product before the eLicenser end of the service.”.

The key word might be “soft”.

Could be, but the key word is not there and that might lead users to believe they can easily register them again after end of service.

But it is there. The sentence with the word “before” includes the word “soft”. The sentence you quoted includes neither.

The text itself isn’t ambiguous, and I’m sure Ed will provide clarity on on this, let’s give him a minute to clarify the difference between his post and the support article.

But eLicenser Service Closes Down in 2025 | Steinberg says explicitly that moving a license from one eLicenser to another would not be possible after May. So what would be the use case of a spare eLicenser?

A post was split to a new topic: Plan to create a separate category for Licensing?

I may be involved too much to see the ambiguity here
If an eLicenser (USB-eLicenser and Soft-eLicenser) is registered and contains a license we offer updates/upgrades for, those can be made even after the servers are shut down. We have found a reliable way to bypass the server check for eligibility and rely on the registrations made in MySteinberg.

Of course, you could register a spare USB-eLicenser but if that eLicenser does not hold any licenses, there is no use for it.

Anything that requires a license transaction within the eLicenser system does not work anymore after May 20, 2025:

  • move licenses from one eLicenser to another
  • reactivate Soft-eLicenser licenses
  • Steinberg Zero Downtime

That explains it completely  Thanks

Phew

Is there a way to move products from eLicenser to Steinberg (online) Licensing? All my Steinberg instruments, like TGuitar or Padshop, have their license stored on my USB-eLicenser. IIUC they’ll continue working as long as the dongle still functions. But if it stops working (I’ve had that 5+ years ago), the instruments will stop working, too? That would be unfortunate since I have many projects using TGuitar specifically.

Check if you have any vouchers for transition.

I don’t have any vouchers. Everything works fine, I’m just worried that at some point it won’t.

Is your elicenser with these products registered in your MySteinberg account?

I would think for TGuitar for example it’s still being sold so must work with Steinberg licensing in which case you should have a voucher.

Oh, I see. Thanks! How would I “work with Steinberg”, though? What’s the process?

You didn’t answer my only question…that would be part one of the process if it’s not. If it is already registered, contact support and list the elicensed software you own and ask if there are vouchers for any of them to transfer to Steinberg licensing.

Sorry for the oversight. Yes, all products present on the USB-eLicenser are also registered in MySteinberg account. Some of them were migrated over to Steinberg Licensing it seems. Other products indicate no status, but one of them (my age-old Halion Symphonic Orchestra) has a Support button next to it, so that’s what I’ll use, and then I’ll hijack the thread to ask about the other non-migrated products, too.
Thanks again for you help!

See here…apparently two different versions and only one is upgradeable to Steinberg licensing. I’m guessing yours is the older one so you may be out of luck on that one.

Yeah. Let’s see what Steinberg Support will be able to do for a product that I installed from DVDs back then.
