ARA2 changing volume levels of events in Cubase/Nuendo

Whenever I use SpectraLayers or Auto Align Post in Cubase/Nuendo, there will be random volume changes of the processed events. It doesn’t happen every time, but consistently enough to make the process unusable. The levels will change on project open/close, so you don’t get the same mix every time you load a project.

Is this an issue with ARA2, or with Steinberg’s implementation? Is it something that has been noted and will be addressed? I don’t know what the priority levels are here but it’s a pretty breaking issue.

I have never noticed such problems. maybe you could describe a re producable way to check it? and if you need help it is helpful to be more informative in your post like what os and spectralayers version you are using

Now Spectralayers edits are not being recalled between project loads, so the whole thing is unusable. The extension is still on the events, but none of the processing is there, so it all must be redone. On Windows 11, Spectralayers 12, everything is up to date.

It looks like this is a very common issue:

Most commonly with Melodyne, as I’m assuming that’s the largest use of ARA2. This could very well be an issue with ARA2, but it’s an enormous pain. It doesn’t appear in small projects, and the only way I’ve found to reproduce it is “work a bunch in a large project and you’ll have problems,” making this difficult to diagnose.

@fakemaxwell for what reason are you quoting me in this post? I’ve never even tried ARA. Only one tiny reason I haven’t tried ARA is because of reported issues on this sub-forum…there are many other reasons I haven’t tried ARA…I don’t see how my comment is relevant to the others.

Looks like the copied post URL was directed at your specific post instead of the thread, updated it (and another that had the same issue).

Well… With ARA2, I’ve now got into the habit of making every edit I do in Melodyne, Revoice Pro, Spectralayer etc. permanent immediately after I’ve done the edit. This avoids the issue. It’s a shame if you want to go back and tweak something in say Melodyne as it’s obviously been ‘printed’. I just can’t afford the time to risk trying to see if the problem still exists… which according to you it does!
I’m assuming youre using Windows OS ?
Does Spectralayers use the Documents folder ?
I wonder if this is something related to OneDrive ?

ok thanks…I did see plenty of relevant posts in that thread you quoted, I just hadn’t said anything that validated your comments

This post initially happened because of the changing volume levels (so even making the extensions permanent didn’t solve it) and then stumbled on this additional, breaking issue. I went to an autosave file about halfway through the project, which must have been what erased all the edits. There is an ARA folder in the project, you would think they would live there but it’s empty. I’m on Windows, no Onedrive though.

I was able to screen record what’s happening- at the moment, I can’t upload the project.

You can see that the clip without any extension is playing back at about -24 LUFS-I, then adding the extension bumps it up to -15. Removing the extension returns it to -24.

These are all mxf files, so I tried rendering in place to a wav and that did not have any strange behavior…but this doesn’t happen on every single mxf file either, so I don’t know if that path leads to anything. Regardless, you can see why this is such a pain.
