Download assistant is broken. Windows 11

So I’ve got a new laptop computer with Windows 11 HOME edition. It’s pretty much untouched apart from installing a browser etc… so it’s straight out of the box OEM installation.

I install Downloasd Assistant and it fails. I didn’t run as administrator the 1st time because it never occurred to me and there was no instruction to do so.

I Then followed the instructions to manually install all the components from the error link. That all went ok. I’ve installed the 5 exes License manager, Media bay, Download assistant etc… whatever they are… And they are all shown as being installed by the OS.

I’ve entered my License code, even though it shouldn’t be necessary to install anyway…

I simply get “An error occurred while Downloading “Cubase xxx - Application” Please try again later.”

But it it’s instant failure like this for everying, nothing starts to download.

I rebooted numerous times and uninstalled / rebooted / re-installed download assistant as admin just to be sure… no change.

Is it a server side thing or WTF?

Greatful for any ideas :frowning: ?

Of course no point in contacting service if I want this working in the next 12 months…

Additional info… everytime I open Download Assistant I get a pop-up “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?” ( i.e. install request ) and then install “Steinberg Install Helper.exe” … so that is broke for some reason…

After passing this I then also get “failed to update the following components: Steinberg built-in ASIO driver … blah blah” - doesn’t sound good but also doesn’t sound relevant to installing the other stuff… but also why? Maybe it’s a clue to general brokeness…

So I maybe solved part of this problem by manually installing the ASIO driver which for some reason fails to install. This clears the error messages for the ASIO driver and repeated attempt to install the “Install Helper” : )

I’ll link the issue here ASIO driver update failure - #5 by Miloslav_Kurca

But I still can’t install anything. I have the same error “An error occurred while downloading 'Cubase 13.0.50 - Application (required)”

I’ve removed, rebooted and reinstalled Download assistant just to be sure.

So now I’ll try to manualy reinstall the other 5 components again.

I hope the irony of this situation is not lost on anyone.

This appears to be a duplicate issue and it is certainly not fixed. So Download assistant is currently broken for Windows 11 Cubase Pro 13 installation.

other possible duplicate, I will test the firewall setting too Steinberg Download Assistant Fails to Download - #2 by Southend_Flamenco

possible duplicate Download Assistant Workaround Win11 Pro (External Drive)

I wouldn’t say this is fixed… as it took me many hours to get the download to start but workaround.

Keep re-trying with starting Download Assistant. It updates itself and needed 3 re-tries from me today before it seemed to update itself correctly, presumably something has been changed since yesterday. Major visual difference was at the 3rd atempt it updated C++ redistributable and some other components.

Do a log in/out of your Steinberg account for good measure, I don’t know if it was relevant but I did that. Remember to click ‘always allow access’ in the Browser security pop-up, again I don’t know if this was actually relevant.

In Download assistant look at the Target folder for the downloads, it’s displayed Greyed out at the top. In my case the folder “Steinberg” in my Downloads had never been created. Folder created manually. Cancel all downloads, re-start Download Assistant. It still fails! Cancel all Downloads again but DON’T try to Install. Re-start Download Assistant again. Then I think it will work… or maybe you have to re-start Download Assistant a 3rd time… Can’t remember exactly how it happened now. Eventually it starts to download.

Same for me using Windows 10. Bought the Cubase 14 Update and am not able to install it (or use the Steinberg Installation Assistant). Really bad user experience after spending money for an update. Before that everything worked fine.

How did it go for you who didn’t solve it? Still unsolved? On brand new PC Win 11 here and have done all I can according to google searches, the forum and Steinberg help section with manual installers. No luck.

How exactly can it not work with manual installers? More details, please.

Sorry I will be more specific.
First of all, I’ve ran the installers separately from here, which is what I meant by manual installers.:

So I install everything. I launch Download Assistant. I click on Cubase Pro 14. First it says: "An error occurred while downloading “Cubase 14.0.10 - Application (required). Please try again later.”

I change the directory to try install it in another directory.
I press “Install” on Cubase 14.0.10.
Then a new error window shows up, saying:
“Steinberg Download Assistant - Error
The download cannot be started because you do not have write permissions to the target directory. Please choose another directory.”

Ah, thanks.
Why did you change the directory in the first place? No need to do that because the first error message “…try again later” can be caused by a variety of reasons.
You might try again or you can take a short cut by downloading the actual files (your Cubase version plus related files) directly from Steinberg. That is what many user do these days (years…).
You find it here:

Make sure that you download the files that are listed beneath your version, please.

I tried to change the directory just to rule things out. Stranger things have worked before throughout my 30 years of computing
I know that one can download Cubase directly from Steinberg but from what I’ve read there are still (optional) things that need to be downloaded from the Download Assistant right?

Yeah, stranger things have happened with the SDA as well
You can download the optional files there as well - listed under optional behind your version. Moreover, you can combine SDA and manual downloads. In other words, you can check later on with your SDA if you forgot anything. The result will remain the same no matter if you install via SDA or manually.

Thanks man, I’ll have a go with it and see where I end up. Reason why I haven’t tried the stand-alone Cubase installer is that I wanted to rule a lot of things out first before messing things up. But hey, feels like the old days with unzipping install-files!

read carefully what I posted above. Sometimes it’s necessary to start the download assistant… do nothing! Then close it again and then start again… If you just immediately go to install it will fail every time. It obviously needs to synchronise some states but if you try to install each time it introduces the error condition again and you get stuck in an endless loop of re-trying. Good luck. i.e. At the point you think you have the folder set-up and all the software components installed. Start DA, cancel all downloads but don’t re-try to install. Close DA. Start DA again. Don’t try to install! Close DA, open it again and then try to install. Maybe that will work.

It worked for my . In re-Installed DA, AM, MI … but it worked your way. Open DA , waiting, Close DA , opened again and the Updates Download and install worked (Cubase14Pro) . THANKs for the advice!

Got that error today too. Had already installed every dependency manually but downloading Cubase 14 Pro or anything else did show the error message.

That advice did it for latest Cubase 14 Pro! Thank you.

Trying to download a content file after that… same error again. Had them all backed-up on a disk already so not a serious problem for me, but not good…
